It was supposed to be a Saturday night at the lake. Young people, a pavilion, warm weather — the kind of gathering that happens all across Oklahoma every weekend this time of year. By 9 p.m., it had turned into a mass shooting, with gunfire ripping through a crowd gathered near Lake Arcadia in Edmond, north of Oklahoma City.
At least ten people were loaded into ambulances with gunshot wounds. Others didn’t wait — they drove themselves to hospitals. Police received a flood of calls almost simultaneously, the kind of frantic, overlapping 911 traffic that tells first responders everything they need to know before they arrive on scene.
“I would guesstimate probably two to three hundred rounds were shot — that’s what it seemed like.”— Jason Hearn, eyewitness
Jason Hearn, who was nearby when the shooting started, ran toward the pavilion. What he found was exactly what you’d expect after a hail of gunfire in a crowd: people on the ground, leg wounds, at least one young woman with a head injury who was still breathing when he reached her. He did what he could.
Witnesses say a fight broke out before the shooting — the kind of altercation that at any other moment, in any other place, might have ended with a few punches and everyone going home. Instead, someone opened fire. And then apparently a lot of someones. The volume of gunfire described by witnesses — hundreds of rounds — suggests this wasn’t a single shooter acting alone, though police have not yet confirmed the number of shooters or released any suspect descriptions.
WHAT WE KNOW RIGHT NOW
Shooting occurred around 9 p.m. Saturday at a pavilion near Lake Arcadia, Edmond — north of Oklahoma City
At least 10 people transported to hospitals by ambulance; additional victims drove themselves — total count still being confirmed
Eyewitnesses report what sounded like 200–300 rounds fired
A fight among the crowd is believed to have preceded the shooting
No arrests made as of Sunday morning; no suspects in custody
Police say there is no current ongoing threat to public safety
Overnight, police had no one in custody. That’s not unusual in the immediate aftermath of a large outdoor shooting — scenes like this are chaotic, witnesses are traumatized, and the crowd disperses fast. But it means the people responsible walked away from this. At least for now.
“These kids came out to probably have a good time,” one witness told reporters, his voice carrying the kind of exhausted disbelief that’s become far too familiar in these moments. “For this to break out — I know that wasn’t what they expected. And it’s just tragic.”
He’s right. It is tragic. And it’s also, at this point, a story that feels like it’s written on a template — a public gathering, a dispute, gunfire, ambulances, a press conference with no suspects. The details change. The shape of it doesn’t. Edmond is a suburban community north of Oklahoma City — not a place where residents expect Saturday nights to end like this.
This is a developing story. We’ll update as police release more information on the victims’ conditions and any progress in identifying those responsible.
