ABC Owes America an Apology and Jimmy Kimmel Owes the President One Too
OPINION / ANALYSIS MEDIA ACCOUNTABILITY APRIL 28, 2026
Two days before a gunman tried to assassinate Donald Trump, ABC’s late-night host joked that Melania had “the glow of an expectant widow.” Funny? The First Lady doesn’t think so. Neither should you.
Let’s not pretend the timing is just an uncomfortable coincidence. On Thursday, April 24th, Jimmy Kimmel sat behind his desk on ABC — a network owned by Disney, watched by millions — and made a joke about Melania Trump glowing like an “expectant widow.” The audience laughed. The network aired it without hesitation. And 48 hours later, a man with two guns, a cross-country train ticket, and a written manifesto targeting administration officials tried to get into the same room as her husband.
Cole Thomas Allen didn’t watch Kimmel and suddenly snap. We know that. He had been planning this since at least April 6th — booking his hotel, purchasing his weapons, scheduling his manifesto to send automatically when the moment came. But that is not the point. The point is this: when the most powerful voices in media spend years calling the President a fascist, a tyrant, a threat to democracy — and then joke, on national television, that his wife should be glowing over his imminent death — they are pouring fuel. They do not get to act surprised when something burns.
“His words are corrosive and deepen the political sickness within America. People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate.”— First Lady Melania Trump, public statement, April 27, 2026
Melania Trump’s response was measured, dignified, and exactly right. She didn’t call for riots. She didn’t demand arrests. She asked a network — politely, publicly — to take responsibility for what it puts on air. That’s not censorship. That’s accountability. The same accountability the media demands of everyone else, apparently except itself.
President Trump was characteristically direct. He called the joke “shocking,” pointed out that Kimmel used a fake video placing Melania and Barron in his studio without consent, and said what millions of Americans were already thinking: enough. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt went further, calling this the third assassination attempt against Trump in two years and naming the climate of hatred that the mainstream media has spent a decade carefully building.
Worth remembering: This is not Kimmel’s first time at this particular fire. He was previously pulled off air after controversial remarks involving conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC brought him back. The pattern continued. Now we’re here.
The rhetoric timeline — how we got here:
Years of coverage Mainstream media and Democratic officials repeatedly compare Trump to Hitler, call him a fascist, and frame his continued existence in office as an existential threat to democracy.
April 2026 Rep. Hakeem Jeffries declares “maximum warfare everywhere, all the time” — framing political opposition as a military conflict.
April 24 Jimmy Kimmel airs a skit describing Melania Trump as having “the glow of an expectant widow.”
April 25, 8:40 PM Cole Allen charges security at the WHCD with a shotgun and pistol. Trump, Melania, and VP Vance are evacuated. Allen is arrested.
April 27–28 ABC stays silent. Disney says nothing. Kimmel has not addressed the timing publicly.
One in seven Americans now say political violence is “sometimes acceptable.” That statistic should terrify every person in this country regardless of party. But it should especially terrify the people who have spent the better part of a decade telling those same Americans that the man in the White House is not just wrong — but evil, dangerous, and worthy of resistance at any cost.
Words have consequences. That used to be something the left believed more loudly than anyone. It would be worth remembering that now.
ABC has a decision to make. Disney has a decision to make. And frankly, so does every American who watched that monologue, laughed, and didn’t think twice about what they were really laughing at.
3rd Alleged assassination attempt on Trump since 2024

1 in 7 Americans who say political violence is sometimes acceptable

You’re right! Kimmel is a criminal! If, god forbid, Trump does get assassinated, Kimmel GOES TO JAIL. Period, no equivocation! If anyone thinks that Kimmel could just say, “hey, I didn’t really mean it”, or “I’m just an entertainer!” they are dead WRONG! ” And anyway, I think Trump is doing a GREAT job! And I voted for John Kennedy years ago! So I an NOT an unthinking ‘automatic’ Republican. Not at all! But Trump brings with him the best America has to offer!
