Trump said he wants Mamdani to succeed and said the mayor has “great potential,” while emphasizing that his interest is in seeing New York do well.

Sunnyside Yard Becomes a Test Case
Housing was one of the clearest areas of potential cooperation.
Mamdani has promoted a major redevelopment of Sunnyside Yard, a large rail-yard site in Queens. The proposal could involve approximately 12,000 homes and 30,000 jobs, according to the mayor and reports following the meeting.
The project would require substantial public investment and cooperation between city and federal officials.
After Monday’s meeting, Mamdani said the two sides had agreed to continue technical discussions involving White House and City Hall teams. The development therefore represents a potential area where federal and local governments could work together despite their broader disagreements.
Importantly, the meeting did not produce a final federal funding commitment.

The Gracie Mansion meeting does not mean Trump and Mamdani have reached agreement on their major policy differences.
Mamdani remains a democratic socialist, while Trump continues to represent a Republican political movement built around very different views on taxation, immigration, regulation and government spending.
The two also differed publicly over media access during Monday’s appearance. Mamdani said he supports broad press access, while Trump defended restrictions placed on certain news organizations at the White House.
That exchange illustrated the limits of their cooperation.
The relationship is therefore less about ideological convergence and more about whether political opponents can identify specific areas where their interests overlap.
