Rubio Reaffirms America First U.S. Won’t Let Iran Threaten Global Shipping
Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a firm message on the Trump administration’s foreign policy during the ASEAN summit, making it clear that the United States will not tolerate attempts to disrupt international shipping or threaten global commerce.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio said the administration remains willing to engage in serious diplomacy with Iran, but stressed that talks must be backed by genuine commitment—not delay tactics or broken promises.
“If they’re serious, we’re serious,” Rubio said. “If they’re not, then we will do what is necessary to protect our interests and the interests of our allies.”
Rubio argued that allowing any nation to control an international waterway through intimidation would set a dangerous global precedent. He warned that if hostile regimes can demand payments or threaten commercial vessels in one region, similar tactics could spread to other key shipping routes around the world.
He emphasized that the issue extends beyond the Middle East, saying freedom of navigation is a cornerstone of global trade and economic stability. Protecting those principles, he said, remains a priority for the United States.
Supporters of President Donald Trump view Rubio’s remarks as another example of the administration’s “peace through strength” approach—combining a willingness to negotiate with a firm commitment to protecting American interests and supporting allies when international security is at stake.
As tensions continue in the region, the administration maintains that strong deterrence and clear leadership remain the best path to preserving stability and keeping vital trade routes open.
