President Donald Trump has followed through on his promise to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” signing an executive order Thursday that directs the U.S. government to use the new name in its official geographic records.
The move is the latest example of Trump putting his America First agenda front and center—and it comes at a particularly tense moment in U.S.-Canada relations.
Standing at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, Trump signed the order with a large Great Lakes map displayed behind him. The president had announced just days earlier that he was seriously considering the name change as trade tensions with Canada intensified.
“We’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario, effective immediately, to Lake America,” Trump said before signing the order.
For Trump supporters, the message is straightforward: American interests should come first, and the president is willing to use the authority of his office to make that principle visible.
Trump Follows Through
The executive order, issued August 27, directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and the Board on Geographic Names to take steps to update the federal Geographic Names Information System, or GNIS.
According to the White House, the federal government will update its maps, documents, contracts and other official references to reflect the name Lake America. The order gives the Interior Department 30 days to complete the appropriate actions.
That distinction matters. Trump can direct the U.S. government to use the name, but the executive order does not require Canada or international organizations to abandon “Lake Ontario.” Canadian officials have already indicated they intend to continue using the historic name.
Still, the symbolism is unmistakable.
Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States has carried a significant share of the economic, security and environmental responsibilities surrounding the Great Lakes. His administration’s executive order points to American investment in the region and highlights the importance of the waterway to U.S. commerce.
Another America First Statement
The timing of the announcement is impossible to separate from Trump’s escalating dispute with Canada.
The president has sharply criticized Canadian trade policies and has argued that American workers and businesses have not received a fair deal. The latest trade confrontation has included major tariffs and retaliatory measures from Canada, raising tensions between two countries that have traditionally maintained one of the world’s closest economic relationships.
Trump has made clear that he believes the United States has been taken advantage of for too long.
That philosophy is at the heart of his America First approach: negotiate from strength, protect American industries and make sure U.S. workers are not treated as an afterthought.
The Lake America order fits neatly into that broader political message.

Why the Great Lakes Matter
Lake Ontario is not simply a name on a map.

Ports, manufacturers, farmers, energy producers and communities throughout the region depend on the broader waterway system.
The White House says the Great Lakes system supports hundreds of thousands of American jobs and billions of dollars in economic activity. The executive order also highlights American investments in protecting the lakes and maintaining commercial shipping.
The administration argues that these contributions deserve recognition.
The order specifically points to the U.S. Coast Guard’s role in keeping Great Lakes shipping lanes open during winter and says the United States has invested nearly $4 billion in protecting the Great Lakes freshwater ecosystem over the past decade.
For Trump and his supporters, calling the lake Lake America is therefore more than a simple change of words. It is intended as a statement about American investment, American workers and American national identity.
Canada Pushes Back
Canadian officials have not embraced the change.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has defended the historic name Lake Ontario, pointing to its Indigenous origins and long history. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has also said that New York will continue using the traditional name.
That opposition was predictable.
But from the Trump administration’s perspective, the disagreement reinforces the president’s argument that Washington needs to stand firmly behind U.S. interests rather than worry about whether foreign governments approve of every American decision.
Trump has never campaigned on making everyone happy.
He campaigned on making America stronger.
That approach has been a defining feature of his political movement since he first entered national politics, and supporters see the Lake America order as another example of the president keeping that promise.

The move also echoes Trump’s earlier decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” for U.S. federal purposes.

Whether “Lake America” becomes widely adopted outside the federal government remains uncertain. Canada is not required to use the name, and private mapping companies make their own decisions about how geographic names are displayed.
But that may not be the point.
